RHS girls snatch third win over Brooks

By Brannon King / For the FCT

Russellville 11, Brooks 1

Russellville’s Autumn Logan hit a walk-off grand slam home run to finish off a Class 5A, Area 16 game in exciting fashion at RHS.

The Golden Tigers run-ruled the Lady Lions in five innings for Russellville’s third win over Brooks so far this season, with two of the victories coming in area play.

RHS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning and added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. After the Lady Lion had plated their only run in the top of the fifth, Russellville answered with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame to send the RHS fans home happy on a cold and windy evening.

Jasmine Galloway hit a home run for Russellville, and other extra-base hits were collected by Sydney Burcham, who had two doubles, and Logan, who also added a double to go along with her homer and five total RBIs. Both Burcham and Lauren Rogers were three-for-four at the plate and AJ Taylor, Karlie Moore, Krista Sikes and Makala O’Neal also joined the group of RHS players with hits. The Russellville base-runners were on the move as well, with Rogers stealing three bases and Taylor swiping one bag.

In the pitching circle, Sikes was too much for the Lady Lions to handle. The sophomore pitched all five innings for the victory. She gave up four hits and struck out three batters. With the win, RHS improved to 2-1 in area play.

“The girls showed up on defense and worked together today,” Russellville head coach Kathryn Montgomery said. “Their bats are very impressive, and I expect them to do well. Today, they just came out and put it all together.”

PHS Tournament

The Russellville girls traveled to Prattville and began their games in the PHS Tournament Saturday.

Helena 11, Russellville 1

The Lady Golden Tigers began their games in the PHS Tournament with a contest against the Helena Huskies.

Helena hit three home runs in the win and had 14 hits in the six-inning game.

Russellville scored their only run in the bottom of the third inning. The Lady Golden Tigers had four hits – by Alivia Clemmons, Logan, Taylor and Sikes. Lauren Rogers scored the RHS run, and Logan had the RBI.

Emma Whitfield and Sikes did the pitching for Russellville. Whitfield worked the game’s first 3.1 innings, and Sikes pitched the remaining 2.2 innings.

Helena 7, Russellville 6

In the second game of the day between the two schools, Helena took the victory with a walk-off win on a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. A fierce comeback attempt by the Lady Golden Tigers – after the Huskies had taken a 6-0 lead after three innings – came up just short. RHS was only able to tie the score with three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.

Russellville outhit the Huskies by a 9-5 tally.

Prattville 10, Russellville 2

After taking on 6A Helena in a couple of games, the opponent came from an even larger school in the form of 7A Prattville in Russellville’s last game in the PHS Tournament.

The home-standing Lions scored in each of the game’s three innings to take the victory. Moore and O’Neal scored the RHS runs in the second inning. Burcham, Clemmons and Moore all had a hit each for the Golden Tigers.

Russellville (7-8) used two pitchers in the game, with Sikes and Whitfield combining efforts to try to stop the Lady Lions.
