Vina girls get shutout over Tremont, boys drop two

The Vina Red Devils managed an easy win over Tremont (Miss.) last week 17-0.
The Red Devils scored one run in the first, one in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth and nine runs in the fifth for the win.
Abby Hester had two singles and two stolen bases in the game. Brooke Brown had a single, double and two RBIs. Sarah Johnson had a single, double and two RBIs. Kaitlyn King and Kassidy Gesler also had two RBI games.
King was the winning pitcher, striking out ten batters.
Hackleburg 16, Vina 13
Vina lost a three-hour marathon to the Hackleburg Panthers 16-13 last week.
Vina led 3-1 after the first inning, primarily on walks and stolen bases. Hackleburg pulled ahead 4-3 until the bottom of the third inning, when the Red Devils scored six runs led by back-to-back singles and runs by Baylee Hutcheson, Sarah Johnson and Kaley Vandiver.
Hackleburg tied the game at 9-9 in the top of the fourth inning. Vina reclaimed the lead 12-9 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hackleburg scored seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 16-12 lead. Vina could only muster up one more run, falling to their area rival.
Hester picked up five stolen bases in the game.
“The girls are beginning to play better offensively,” said coach Richie Hester, “but we still have a lot of work to do on defense.”
Boys
Hubbertville 11, Vina 9
The Vina Red Devils and Hubbertville Lions battled for the lead every inning, but the Lions were able outlast the Red Devils 11-9 and get the win.
Vina scored first in the top of the first inning on an RBI-double by Austin Childers to take a 1-0 lead. Hubbertville took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
Vina scored five runs in the top of the second inning on hits by Austin Harper, Childers, and J Landers to take a 6-3 lead, but the Lions battled back, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-6 lead.
Vina tied the game in the top of the fourth inning, 7-7, but Hubbertville scored two in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 9-7 lead.
The Red Devils tied the game again with two runs in the top of the sixth inning but, once again, the Lions answered, scoring two in the bottom of the sixth to get the win.
Harper had a big game, going three-for-four with two RBIs and three runs scored. Childers also had a two-RBI night. Haze Weatherford went three-for-four and scored a run.
Pickens County 6, Vina 4
The Vina Red Devils couldn’t overcome eight fielding errors, as their comeback attempt fell short to Pickens County 6-4.
Pickens County led Vina 5-0 going into the fourth inning. The Red Devils picked up a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to close the game, despite just one hit by Isaac Harper, a two-RBI single.
