Homefolks U.S.A.

Hi folks,

Sometimes it’s really difficult to come up with happy, positive stories, especially when the flu season is taking such a drastic toll and the weather remains in the freezing and below-freezing temperatures.

Back many years ago, the coldest place in the county was Russellville, when the temperature dropped to 25 degrees below zero. It’s really hard to believe that it got that cold, but that’s what the weatherman told us, so I guess we need to believe their forecast.

At that time, when the temperature dropped to the record low, I was employed by Barclift’s Furniture Company, and I remember that Bill and his wife were in Florida that day. I remember Bill called the next morning (after the news hit that Russellville was the coldest place in the state) almost in the tears, thinking that all the pipes in his house had frozen and busted. It was a real relief for him to know that all was well.

Maybe in a few weeks we will see the temperatures moderate, and perhaps better days are just ahead.

This past week we were all sad to say goodbye to a fine outstanding gentleman who has been a part of this county for 83 years. He served his country in the military and worked for U.S. Reduction for many years.

I talked with several people who had worked with him and had great stories to share about this gentleman. Not only did he serve his country in the military and his county by working with U.S. Reduction, he was also a member and deacon of Liberty Hill Church.

While I was waiting in line to show my respect, I heard so many good stories of days gone by, and so many remarks were made about the love and concern he had for his family. He will certainly be missed, but as I have said many times: Death cannot destroy the good memories we have of family, friends and loved ones that have left us. Certainly this would be true about Mr. Lyon “Rooster” Burfield. Our deepest condolences go out to the family during this time of their loss.

Thanks for reading our stories each week. We would consider it an honor to share stories about your family or friends in one of our editions of Homefolks U.S.A.

Til next time,

Your friend,

Bobby
