Vina cross country runner signs scholarship

By Bart Moss / For the FCT

Elizabeth Baty has been running cross country for coach Paul Humphres and Vina High School for six years. All of the hard work and countless hours have paid off for the senior, with a scholarship to Blue Mountain College in Mississippi.

“I am blessed to get to run for Blue Mountain College,” said Baty. “I felt at home when I toured the campus. I am glad I have the opportunity to run at the collegiate level.”

In 2014 and 2015, Baty was a state qualifier in the 1600-meter run and the 3200-meter run and was a member of Vina’s 4×800-meter relay team. In 2016 she was state qualifier in the 1600-meter run. Every year from 2012-2017, she qualified for the state in cross country either as an individual or a member of Vina’s team.

Baty has a personal best time of 21:44 in the 5K. Her personal best time in the two-mile is 13:53. In the mile run, Baty has a personal best time of 6:18.

“I am very proud of how hard Elizabeth has worked through her career and her determination to be the best she can be,” said Humphres. “It has been an honor and a privilege to have coached her.”

Blue Mountain College cross country coach Page Thorn said she is excited to add Baty to her team.

“I can already see that Elizabeth has such a sweet spirit and also a high level of determination,” said Thorn. “She will be a key part of our team, and I am really thankful for signing her.”
