RPL adds new programs

A new year brings new resolutions, and for those who have resolved to get themselves or their children more involved in the community, there are now several new options to do just that at the Russellville Public Library.

Starting in January there will be monthly events held at RPL for children and adults in the mornings and evenings.

“It’s something we’ve been wanting to do for a while. We’ve always tried to have as many events as we can, and it’s going to be easier having them scheduled like this,” library director Ashley Cummins said.

Jan. 13 kicks off the first “2nd Saturday” movie event of the year. Every second Saturday of the month, RPL will start playing a movie at 11 a.m. Cummins said movies will be chosen from their selection at the library, and people are more than welcome to make requests.

“We try to stay current with the latest DVD releases, so we’ll probably show a lot of those,” Cummins said.

Jan. 18 the first “3rd Thursday” event will take place. Cummins said these are programs for adults that will include guest speakers, local authors and how-to classes. They will last from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Cummins said a local Red Bay author will be the speaker at the first event.

In February children will have the opportunity to participate in two different events every first Friday. At 10:30 a.m. there will be a Pre-K story time, and after school at 3:30 p.m. will be game time. Cummins said the library has a wide assortment of board games for all ages, including adults.

“It’s a low-maintenance program that we can offer to the community. Everyone is welcome,” she said.

For those looking to get healthier or shed a few pounds, RPL will once again be participating in Scale Back Alabama, a statewide weight-loss program. From Jan. 9 through April 5 RPL will serve as a weigh-in station for those participating.

“We always have good participation. It’s a great way for people to keep themselves accountable,” Cummins said.

To go along with this program, RPL is offering a few exercise classes. Once a week starting Jan. 17 there will be a Yoga for Arthritis/Sit and be Fit classes for seniors and those with limiting conditions like arthritis. Classes will start at 10:30 a.m. and will be video instructor-led.

Every Tuesday and Thursday there will be Fitness & Fun for Free classes, which will include Zumba on Tuesdays and Sweatin’ to the Oldies on Thursdays. The classes will start at 6 p.m. and will also be video instructor-led.

“Anyone can come, but we just ask that for your safety you check with your doctor first to make sure that you are physically fit enough to participate,” Cummins said.

Cummins said the library wanted to offer more to the community and now is the perfect time.
