Back-to-school sales tax holiday set for this weekend
That all-important first day of school will be here in the blink of an eye. This weekend, parents can begin to prepare for their children’s return to the classroom during the annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday.
The tax-free weekend comes earlier this year, July 21-23, as compared to previous years, when it has taken place the first weekend in August. A wide range of items are exempt from state and local sales tax this weekend, including a variety of clothing and school supplies.
Clothing is exempt for items costing $100 or less, including belts, shoes, socks, hats, jackets shirts and pants, as well as underwear, diapers, pajamas and more.
Items that are not exempt include jewelry, sports gear, hard hats and safety goggles, among others.
Computers and related accessories, such as compact disks and printers/printer paper and ink costing $750 or less will be exempt. Typical classroom supplies such as binders, folders, chalk, calculators, backpacks, notebooks, paper, crayons, erasers, glue sticks, highlighters, markers, index cards, legal pads, poster board, pencils and sharpeners, rulers and scissors will be tax exempt, as will books $30 or less.
