RPL plans program for D-Day anniversary

Russellville Public Library Director Ashley Cummins said the library’s upcoming adult program came together as a matter of kismet.

The library board was in the midst of planning summer activities. “We knew we wanted to offer a program for the adults,” Cummins explained. Programs were targeted to begin in the month of June, and as Cummins and the board began to consider potential programs, historian Jim Phillips called to propose his presentation covering D-Day. “It just fit our timeline perfectly.”

Phillips’ program, set for June 6 at 1 p.m., will mark the anniversary of the Normandy invasion, featuring myriad interesting facts.

“Jim Phillips an Alabama historian who talks all over the state,” Cummins said. The historical videographer and collector “always does a captivating, well-researched program … It’s nice to hear a good story, but it’s even better if you get some good local stories.”

Phillips has spoken at the library on previous occasions, covering Lost Antebellum Alabama and Ghost Stories of Alabama. For the D-Day-centric program, Cummins said he will share little-known facts about D-Day and the Normandy beach landings and local stories of people who were involved in World War II during D-Day. Cummins said the program will last about an hour, and Phillips always takes questions.

“I think it will be really interesting, and we’re hoping to get a good crowd,” Cummins said. “Hopefully it will be a good start to a good program.”

The library will serve light refreshments, and people are welcome to bring a lunch.

RPL Summer Reading Program

Russellville Public Library is expanding its program this year. In addition to the traditional activities for ages 4-11, the library will also host the Lap Baby (read to me) program for ages 0-3; a teen program; and additional special events for adults and seniors. All library programs are free to participate.

For Lap Baby, children from 0-3 are invited to the library for a special Story Hour each Wednesday in June, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Volunteer readers will help bring the program to life. For the Summer Reading Program, the cornerstone of RPL’s summer offerings open to ages 4-11, children are invited to a special program each week at the library on Fridays at 1 p.m. on the theme “Build a Better World.”

The Teen Group program will meet each Thursday in June, starting June 8. There will be prizes, snacks, craft time and more. Unique book-related art projects are in the plans, like blackout poetry. Adult programs will be each Tuesday in June at 1 p.m. Several guest speakers will present at the library.

The Russellville Public Library is located at 110 E. Lawrence St., in downtown Russellville. For more information call 256-332-1535.
