‘Jeans for Justice’ stands with rape victims

In 1999 in a rape case in Italy, a judge overturned a 1998 rape conviction because the victim had been wearing jeans at the time of the rape – and, the judge argued, it would be impossible to remove someone’s jeans without that person’s consent.

Global protests erupted, and today they continue in the form of the “Jeans for Justice” campaign.

Locally, “Jeans for Justice” is organized and sponsored by the UNA Department of Sociology and Family Studies in conjunction with Shoals Crisis Center. An eye-catching blue jean-centric exhibit was on display at the Franklin County Courthouse last week as part of the annual observance.

Employers and schools were encouraged to host donation-required “jean days,” with the proceeds going to Shoals Crisis Center, which provides counseling and other resources for sexual assault victims.
