Phil Campbell softball wins Vina Invitational

The Phil Campbell Bobcats softball team had a great spring break, starting off with a 7-2 win over Sulligent and capping off the week by winning the Vina Invitational. In that tournament, Phil Campbell split with Covenant Christian and beat Phillips 7-5.

Phil Campbell had a six-run second inning, and that was all they would need to beat the Sulligent Blue Devils 7-2 last Tuesday. The Bobcats had 11 hits in the game.
Emily Swinney scored on a sacrifice fly to start the Bobcats’ scoring in the second inning. Olivia Knight hit a two-RBI single into right field to score Karley Ergle and Chloe Roberson to make it 3-0. Knight later scored on a single by Leeah Jackson. Katie Thomas scored on a single by Olivia Taylor. Jackson came around to score later on a Swinney single to cap off a six-run inning for the Bobcats.
Sulligent scored two runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Bobcats’ lead to 6-2.
Phil Campbell added their final run in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Swinney doubled in Jackson to give the Bobcats a 7-2 lead.
Swinney led the Bobcats, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Jackson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Knight went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Swinney, Ergle and Thomas each had a double in the game.
Swinney also got the win in the circle, striking out seven batters.
Covenant Christian 6, Phil Campbell 2
Covenant Christian scored four runs in the top of the second inning, and that was all they would need to beat the Phil Campbell Bobcats 6-2 at the Vina Invitational.
Phil Campbell didn’t score until Covenant Christian had built up a 5-0 lead. The Bobcats scored one in the bottom of the second inning, when Olivia Ergle scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1. Phil Campbell scored again in the bottom of the fourth when Kenner Scott scored on a single by Leeah Jackson.
Jackson led the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Phil Campbell 7, Phillips 5
The Phil Campbell Bobcats overcame four errors and held on to win 7-5 over the Phillips Bears in the Vina Invitational last week.
Phil Campbell scored three runs in the first and second innings to garner enough runs to hold on for the win and advance to the finals of the tournament.
Katie Thomas scored first for the Bobcats. Olivia Taylor had a two-RBI double, scoring Caitlyn Mills and Leeah Jackson to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Phillips added one in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 3-1.
The Bobcats added three more in the second inning, when Mills doubled in Karley Ergle and Olivia Knight. Mills later scored on a single by Abby Davis to give the Bobcats a 6-1 lead. Phillips scored two in the bottom half of the inning to make the score 6-3.
Phil Campbell added another run in the top of the third inning, when Knight scored, stealing home.
Phillips would add two more runs in the fourth.
Mills led the Bobcats, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Knight went 2-for-2, scoring two runs. Davis and Taylor had two RBIs each. Taylor, Mills and Knight each had a double.
Swinney got the win for the Bobcats.
Phil Campbell 13, Covenant Christian 3
The Phil Campbell Bobcats scored 13 runs on 12 hits to blow out the Covenant Christian Eagles and win the Vina Invitational.
Phil Campbell opened up a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Katie Thomas scored on a sacrifice fly by Abby Davis.
The Bobcats piled up five runs in the third inning to extend their lead to 6-0. Caitlyn Mills scored on a line drive double by Davis. Davis and Harley Cummings scored on single by Emily Swinney to make it 4-0. Olivia Taylor scored on a double by Chloe Roberson, and Swinney scored on a fielder’s choice to give the Bobcats a 6-0 lead.
Phil Campbell blew the game wide open in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs. Swinney scored on a double by Katie Thomas. Knight scored on a single by Mills. Thomas and Mills scored on a two-RBI double by Leeah Jackson. Finally, Cummings scored on a single by Bethany Scott.
Covenant scored their three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
Thomas went 2-for-4 with two RBIS and two runs scored. Mills went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Cummings went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Swinney went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Jackson had two RBIs and a hit and scored a run. Davis had hit and two RBIs and scored a run. Jackson, Roberson, Swinney, Davis and Thomas all doubled in the game.
