RHS boys wrap season, head into Area play

Deshler 75, Russellville 63
Deshler came to Russellville Jan. 31 and defeated the Golden Tigers, who were without Bailey Motes due to flu-like symptoms. Deshler led 18-9 at the end of the first quarter and 40-33 at the half.
RHS went on a 7-0 run to start the second half to tie the score, but Belgreen graduate Brian Pounders’ Deshler squad got things going late and outscored Russellville 21-12 in the final period.
Russellville was led by Austin Stidham’s 21 points. He was followed by Devin Buckhalter (20), Taylor Vincent (10), Judd Ward (4), Lucas McNutt (4), Caden Parker (2) and Nate Franklin (2).
Russellville 68, Sheffield 64
Russellville celebrated Senior Night Feb. 2 and took an exciting victory over the Sheffield Bulldogs. RHS Coach Patrick Odom paid tribute to all five of his seniors by allowing them to start the game as a group. Bailey Motes, Austin Stidham, Taylor Vincent, Nate Franklin and Judd Ward all were honored before the game.
RHS jumped out to a 12-2 lead at the start of the game and led 39-32 at the half. However, Sheffield came on strong in the fourth quarter and made the game close down to the end until Lucas McNutt made one of two free-throws to seal the win.
“It’s always special when you’re able to get a win on Senior Night,” Odom said. “Those five seniors are very special to me, and it’s been a blessing to have coached them. Tonight’s a big win for our entire team because we beat a very quality opponent.”
Motes led Russellville in scoring with 25 points. Buckhalter (17) and Stidham (14) also scored in double figures. They were followed by Vincent (6), McNutt (3) and Parker (3).
Haleyville 68, Russellville 53
Haleyville got hot shooting from outside the three-point line to start the game, and then Logan Dye took over in the paint to help the Lions to a victory over RHS.
HHS hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and six in the game to take the win. Dye was too much for Russellville on this night. He had 30 points in the game and shook the rim a few times with slam dunks that electrified the home crowd.
Russellville (16-7) got 21 points from Lucas McNutt in the game. He was followed by Motes (12), Buckhalter (11), Stidham (7) and Ward (2).
