Lucy Lynn Underwood
Lucy Lynn Underwood, a native of Russellville, passed away July 10. Ms. Underwood was the daughter of Delia Covington Underwood and Charles Terrell Underwood.
She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Wilbur and Nancy Underwood of Russellville, AL; her niece Linda Lynn Marlette, Jacksonville, FL; nephews Timothy O. Underwood, Tucker, GA; and Michael W. Underwood, Huntsville, AL; and her many special and former students.
Ms. Underwood was a graduate of the University of Montevallo (then Alabama College) and received her M.A. from the University of Michigan. For thirty-six years she served as associate professor of music at Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia. In 1985 Ms. Underwood was named Distinguished Professor by the GC&SU Foundation and in 1986, Distinguished Alumna by the University of Montevallo. A teacher of generations of successful public school music teachers, Ms. Underwood was also a prize-winning composer, setting prayers, biblical texts and the poetry of such writers as Amy Lowell and Sarah Gordon to music. These works were performed at Florida State University; the National Women’s Music Festival; St. Phillips Cathedral; Durham Cathedral (England); Columbus College; Georgia College & State University; and elsewhere. Upon retirement, Ms. Underwood was granted professor emeritus status by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. Ms. Underwood was a communicant of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Milledgeville.
A funeral service will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church at 10:30 a.m. on July 14, with the very Reverend David C. Probst officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Department of Music and Theater at Georgia College, the Sarah Gordon Scholarship at GC&SU, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church or a charity of the donor’s choice.
