Vina hits record books

By Bart Moss for the FCT

The Vina Red Devils have been involved in some shootouts recently, and the Alabama High School Athletic Association has taken notice. The AHSAA keeps an online record book at www.AHSAA.com under each sports tab. The girls basketball records can be found specifically at http://www.ahsaa.com/Sports/Basketball/Girls-Basketball-Records

The following are the new entries into the record books by the Vina Red Devils:

  • Most 3-point goals made by one team (Vina is now sixth place in the record books). This occurred in this year’s Franklin County Tournament when the Red Devils hit 17 three-point shots – ten by freshman Emma Humphres, four by eighth grader Kaitlynn King and three by sophomore Abby Hester.
  • Most 3-point goals made by two teams combined. This occurred Jan. 25 when the Red Devils faced Brilliant. There were 21 three-pointers in the game – Vina had 11 and Brilliant had 10.  (This is a new category in the AHSAA record book created specifically for this game.) A second game this season involving Vina was added to the list as well in the second spot: the Jan. 12 game with Tharptown in the Franklin County Tournament where there were 20 three-pointers made – 17 by Vina and three by Tharptown.
  • Most 3-point goals made by an individual player: Emma Humphres. Emma drained ten three-point shots in the Jan. 12 game against Tharptown, placing her seventh on the list.

“It’s great for our team and these girls to be recognized by the AHSAA for their accomplishments,” said Vina coach Richie Hester.
