Former standout athlete arrested over weekend

Brent-Calloway

A former Russellville High School and University of Alabama student-athlete was arrested over the weekend stemming from drug charges.

Brent Calloway, 22, of Florence, was arrested March 20 after Florence Police found marijuana and “spice,” a synthetic form of marijuana, in the car he was driving, according to Florence Police Sgt. Scott Perkins.

“The officer stopped him for running a red light at the intersection of Wood Ave. and Hermitage Drive,” Perkins said.

Perkins said a drug dog was then brought to the scene to search the 2007 white Chevrolet Malibu Calloway was driving.

“The drug dog was brought to the scene and did a sweep around the outside of the car,” Perkins said. “The dog indicated there was the odor of drugs inside the car and at that time officers searched the interior.”

Officers found eight grams of spice and an undisclosed amount of marijuana, according to officials.

Calloway was free on a $4,000 bond later on the evening of March 20.

The charge for possession of that amount of spice is a felony, while the marijuana possession charge is a misdemeanor, according to Perkins.

Calloway is not a stranger to trouble with the law as he was dismissed from the University of Alabama football team in February of 2013 following an arrest for using a University of Alabama student’s debit card that he later admitted to knowing was stolen.

In 2011 he was arrested for possession of marijuana as a passenger in a car that was stopped on the campus in Tuscaloosa.

Calloway was a standout running back at Russellville High School and was a highly sought, four-star recruit that was offered scholarships by numerous schools including Auburn and Alabama.
