Lady Red Devils pick up another win

The Vina Red Devils girls basketball team picked up their second win of the season on Senior Night in a big way by defeating Waterloo 47-26.
“I am thrilled for these girls, especially these seniors,” said Vina coach Paul Humphres. “What a way to go out as seniors- a big win. They have worked hard all year long and have endured of lot of tough losses. They had a great time tonight and they deserved it.
“It has been a great pleasure coaching these girls. They have worked hard. They have done everything I have asked of them. Things certainly haven’t been easy, and sometimes its been frustrating, but to see their excitement after winning tonight makes it all worth it.”
The Red Devils jumped out to 20-9 lead in the first quarter. They extended their lead to 34-18 by halftime. By the end of the third quarter Vina led 43-21 and cruised to the easy win.
Morgan Humphres led the Red Devils with 19 points. Emma Humphres added 14 points.
Others scoring for the Red Devils were Cassandra Spencer (5), Mary Clingan (4), Hannah Baggett (3), and Montanna Howard (2).
The varsity boys lost a heartbreaker. Leading for much of the game, Vina was unable to hang on in the end losing to Waterloo 50-43.
Vina jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first quarter. Waterloo battled back and cut the score to 20-18 by halftime. The Red Devils clung to a one point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 30-29. Waterloo stormed ahead in the final period of play outscoring Vina 21-13.
“I thought we played a great game,” said Vina coach Justin Humphres. “I really felt like we outplayed them the whole game, but you have to give them credit they made more plays than we did and made their free throws down the stretch.”
Free throws accounted for 13 of Waterloo’s 21 fourth quarter points.
“We had some mental mistakes in the fourth quarter when it was a two point game that really hurt us.”
“I was heartbroken for my seniors,” said Humphres. “They really wanted to win their last home game and they played well enough to do so.”
