Vina Lady Red Devils pick up first win of the season

The Vina Red Devils girls picked up their first win of the season last week defeating Covenant Christian 48-30.
“Our girls are starting to play much better,” said Vina coach Paul Humphres. “We are showing some signs of improvement and that’s the key thing. We have a young team and confidence goes a long way. You get confidence by improving and having some success.”
Eighth grader Emma Humphres provided a spark off the bench for Red Devil sinking a game-high 19 points.
“Emma hit some shots and gave us a much needed boost,” said Humphres. “The girls hustled and played hard for 32 minutes. They didn’t let up.”
Vina jumped out to 14-2 lead in the first quarter. Covenant Christian battled back in the second quarter outscoring Vina 11-7 to cut the Red Devils lead to 21-13. Covenant Christian inched a little closer in the third quarter outscoring Vina 13-11 to pull within six points, 32-26. The Vina Red Devils owned the fourth quarter outscoring Covenant Christian 16-4 to pull away with the win.
Others scoring for Vina were Hannah Baggett (9), Morgan Humphres (9), Montanna Howard (5), Kendra Elrod (2), Mary Clingan (2), and Anna Belle Upton (2).
The Red Devils also took a loss last week to the Hackleburg Panthers 67-42.
Morgan Humphres and Emma Humphres led the Red Devils will 13 points and 12 points respectively. Others scoring in the game versus Hackleburg were Hannah Baggett (5), Montanna Howard (4), Cassandra (4), Ashleigh Thompson (2), and Erica Cantrell (2).
