Vina splits series with Phillips

Vina added a 13-8 1A Area 15 win over Phillips on Thursday in game one of a doubleheader.

Vina jumped out to a three-run lead in the bottom of the first and added another five runs in the second to take an 8-0 advantage.

Phillips scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth to cut Vina’s lead by a score of 8-5.

They also added two runs in the fifth, but the Red Devils scored one in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the sixth to build a 9-7 lead.

Vina’s Jonathan Sullivan was 3 for 4 with four RBIs, Drake Hester was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and one RBI, Andrew Hester walked three times with four runs scored and one RBI, Justin Gravitt was 1 for 2 with one walk and one RBI.

Vina’s Andrew Hester was the winning pitcher, giving up three hits with four strikeouts.

Justin Gravitt got the save with two innings pitched. Gravitt gave up two hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.

 

Phillips 8, Vina 3

In game two, Vina had a two-run lead in the bottom of the first, but failed to added any more until the bottom of the seventh.

Phillips scored three in the third, two in the fifth, and three in the seventh for the win.

Vina’s Drake Hester was the losing pitcher, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. Tyler Renfrow pitched three innings, giving up three runs on two hits and no earned runs.

Cody Wilkins pitched two innings, giving up three runs on three hits.

Drake Hester was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Andrew Hester was 1 for 3 and one run scored, and Cody Wilkinson was 1 for 3 and one run scored.
