Masterson competing in Distinguished Young Women of Alabama program

High school senior girls from across Alabama will join together in Montgomery for the Distinguished Young Women of Alabama program (formerly Junior Miss), which is taking place Jan. 10-18, at Frazer United Methodist Church in Montgomery.
This year, Franklin County is represented by Russellville High School senior Julie Masterson.
Masterson and other participants will compete for $41,000 in cash scholarships and over $2 million in college granted scholarships, as well as the opportunity to represent the state of Alabama as the Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama for 2014.
The 48 young women competing will be evaluated by a panel of five judges in the following categories: Scholastics (20 percent), Interview (25 percent), Fitness (15 percent), Self-Expression (15 percent), and Talent (25 percent).
The participant selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama will advance to the national level at the 57th Distinguished Young Women National Finals in Mobile in June, where she will join with 49 other state representative in competing for cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America.
The Distinguished Young Woman of Alabama will be named Jan. 18 during the statewide scholarship competition final to be held in Montgomery.
Finals begin on Friday night, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m., continue Saturday afternoon, Jan. 18, at 1:30 p.m., and conclude Saturday night, Jan. 18, at 7 p.m.
Masterson is the daughter of Jeff and Leah Masterson of Russellville.
