Naked joy ride leads man to jail

RED BAY – One Red Bay police officer saw more than just a broken headlight during a routine traffic stop last week.
Officials said Matthew R. Miller, 42, 801 6th St. NW, Red Bay, was charged with public lewdness last Tuesday during a routine traffic stop when officers discovered he was driving without any clothes on.
According to Red Bay Police Chief Janna Jackson, a patrol officer stopped Miller at 1 a.m. Wednesday for having a headlight out.
Jackson said when the officer went to the driver’s side window, he saw that Miller wasn’t wearing any clothing, which warranted the public lewdness charge.
Jackson said when the case was turned in to the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office, officers discovered Miller also had a prior sexually-related conviction from 19 years ago.
“We discovered that Mr. Miller was convicted of indecent exposure in 1993, which is a sexual offense that requires you to register at the local sheriff’s office as a sex offender,” Jackson said. “We discovered Mr. Miller had never registered as a sex offender so he was additionally charged with failure to register on Saturday.”
Miller is still in custody at the Franklin County Jail.
