Lady Tigers claim area tournament

RED BAY — Using strong pitching performances from Whitney Sharp and Emily Cox the Red Bay varsity softball team rolled to the Class 2A, Area 12 Tournament title Thursday.

The Lady Tigers went 3-0 in the tournament and outscored their opponents 23-0.

Red Bay opened the tournament with a 10-0 victory against Sulligent.

Sharp gave up a single to the first hitter of the game then retired 15 consecutive batters. She also helped her cause at the plate, hitting a home run, a double and a single while recording three RBIs.

Monique Dulaney tripled, singled and had two RBIs while Lauren Pacetti doubled and singled. Cox also hit a double in the game.

With the win the Lady Tigers advanced to play Phil Campbell. Cox pitched seven innings, striking out nine and allowing only one hit to pick up the win for Red Bay.

Audrey Goss tripled, doubled and drove in three runs while Hannah Sharp doubled and had two RBIs. Whitney Sharp doubled while Lexy Lindsey and Katie Harris both singled.

Korina Jimenez had the only hit for Phil Campbell.

Red Bay then faced Sulligent again in the championship game. Whitney Sharp pitched another strong game and hit a solo home run to earn the 6-0 victory.

Hannah Sharp tripled and scored a run in the second inning to give the Lady Tigers the early lead. Red Bay added three runs in the fifth inning to pull away for good.

With the win the Lady Tigers advance to the North Central Regional Softball Tournament at Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills. They will play the runner-up of Area 9 Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Phil Campbell 16, Lamar County 6

Lamar County scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-4 lead, but Phil Campbell rallied to earn the 16-6 victory. The Lady Bobcats scored five runs in the fifth inning and eight runs in the sixth inning.

Amber Chaney and Sarah Hilliard scored three runs each to lead Phil Campbell while Whitley Yocom, Lindsey Jackson and Sarah Hester scored two runs each.

Jackson struck out seven to pick up the win on the mound.

Sulligent 10, Phil Campbell 0

Sulligent scored five runs in the sixth inning to pull away from Phil Campbell on its way to a 10-0 victory to keep earn a spot in the North Central Regional Softball Tournament.

The loss ended Phil Campbell’s season.

Chaney, Jackson and Tisha Parker each hit a single while Hester doubled.
