Making memories in unexpected places
This past weekend, I went with my grandmother and two aunts to the 15-mile yard sale.
I wasn’t all too excited to get up early on a Saturday morning, but I’ve never been to anything like this, and after a little coaxing from Aunt Susan, I agreed to go.
I honestly didn’t think there would be that many people there, but I was wrong.
We started our 15-mile journey at the Pebble Community Center, and I have never seen so many people crowded into a small space.
And I have never seen so much stuff.
You could pretty much buy anything from kids’ clothes to chickens.
(Yes, chickens. And one of them might have come home with me if I’d thought my husband would let me get away with bringing a chicken home to live with us.)
But really, the most entertaining thing was just being with my grandmother and aunts.
We all act just like Lucy and Ethel. You never know what kind of shenanigans are going to take place.
You couldn’t find a happier person at that yard sale than my grandmother after she bought a cookware lid to replace one she had broken a few years ago.
Aunt Jan bought a concrete squirrel for her yard just before Aunt Susan ran over a real squirrel in her car.
We almost turned Aunt Susan’s Toyota Camry into a rocket after she careened around Horseshoe Bend like a mad woman.
And we concluded our little adventure with a trip to Major William Russell’s grave (since it was a travesty that I had never been there).
While the main purpose of our trek all over the southwest end of Franklin County was to search for bargains, the 15-mile yard sale wasn’t just about the stuff being sold.
The event also gave my grandmother, my aunts and me the opportunity to admire the pretty countryside right here in our neck of the woods and to make some pretty good memories.
