Red Devils seeking first win

VINA — Vina has had a tough start to the season.

Following a last-second loss to Cherokee to open the season, the Red Devils faced a trio of tough region opponents in Shoals Christian, Hackleburg and Addison.

Vina enters the Week 5 non-region game against Jacksonville Christian Academy with a 0-4 record, but head coach James Pharr has not given up hope and neither has his players.

“They try hard and hustle,” Pharr said about the Red Devils. “They haven’t laid down. Hopefully we can get things turned around this week.”

Pharr said the Thunder (2-2, 1-2) have several big players and run the wishbone on offense. Jacksonville Christian has scored 114 points this season.

The Red Devils have faced some potent offenses in the past couple of weeks and that might benefit them when they play the Thunder.

“We are playing better in pass coverage,” Pharr said.

Of course football requires great execution on both sides of the ball.

Vina has struggled on offense — the Red Devils have only scored multiple touchdowns once this year and have scored a total of 35 points through four games — but Pharr is seeing improvement on that side of the ball as well.

“The offensive line is getting better at pass blocking,” Pharr said.

The Red Devils have also found success in the running game the past couple of weeks against speedy defenses.

This will be Vina’s homecoming game and will begin at 7 p.m.
