HACKLEBURG — The Vina football team did a good job of limiting a potent Hackleburg offense during the first half Friday night, but the Panthers proved too strong and walked away with a 33-6 victory.
Eighth-ranked Hackleburg (3-0, 2-0), which was averaging 45 points per game, built a 19-0 lead at halftime and extended the advantage to 33-0 in the second half.
Vina (0-3, 0-2) avoided the shutout when Nick Schmittou hit Adam Pharr for a 25-yard scoring pass as time expired.
Schmittou ended the game completing 5-of-9 passes for 57 yards and one interception. He was also the leading tackler with five stops.
The Red Devils had four other players complete passes for a total of 67 yards.
Ethan Hammock led the rushing attack for Vina, gaining 64 yards on 18 carries while Ethan Pharr rushed for 33 yards on four carries.
The Red Devils host Addison next week.
