RB native finds love for cooking early
Angie Warren has been cooking for most of her life and her dreams of opening up her own deli/bakery became reality when she and friends decided to open Devine Inspirations featuring Katie Kakes in Red Bay. | Nathan Strickland/FCT
RED BAY – Angie Warren said she always wanted to be in the kitchen so it came no surprise to anyone that she would spend her life in the kitchen as a cook and caterer.
“I was the kind of kid you had to run out of the kitchen,” she said. “I always wanted to be in there learning to cook and bake. I love it even now.”
Warren spent countless hours with her mother and grandmother in the kitchen growing up.
“My mom and grandmother always let me help,” Warren said. “They were glad I wanted to learn.”
Warren grew up in a home where there were fresh baked cookies and homemade meals at night.
“I didn’t know what a store-bought cookie was until I was in kindergarten, and I didn’t like it,” she laughed.
She remembers her mother making up cookie dough and freezing it so homemade cookies could be readily available.
“I can remember getting the dough down from the freezer and cutting off cookies to put in the oven at age six,” Warren said.
Warren’s love for the kitchen doesn’t stop at cakes and cookies. It goes into cooking meals as well.
“I love to cook country food,” she said. “Beans and potatoes. I remember cooking dinner for my mom and dad at age nine.”
Warren recalls her first dinner she ever made was spaghetti, and both her parents ate it.
Today, Warren’s passion is still food. She is part owner of Divine Inspirations featuring Katie Kakes in Red Bay.
“I love making cakes,” she said “I have had people bring me things they want to be made into a cake, and I’ll figure it out. I love it that much. I’ll do whatever I need to do to figure it out.”
Warren’s recent creation, a Bear Bryant hat cake, will be featured in an upcoming cake decorating magazine.
“They [the magazine] told me they were going to run the picture of the cake and everything in the coming months,” Warren said. “They haven’t exactly told me when, but I will get to see the article before it prints.”
Warren added it’s ironic to her she is set to receive recognition for a cake honoring Bryant when she’s an Auburn fan.
