Vina tops Wildcats for third straight win

VINA – Vina scored early and often as it rolled to a 46-13 victory against Tharptown to push the Red Devils' winning streak to three games.
Morgan McCarley opened the scoring with an 8-yard run and he added the 2-point conversion to give Vina an 8-0 lead.
Brent Townsend extended the lead with a 3-yard run and McCarley added another 2-point run with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter.
McCarley found Townsend for a 43-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. The point-after attempt failed, but the Red Devils (4-5, 2-3) had a 22-0 lead.
The Wildcats (2-6, 1-4) got their first touchdown of evening with 8:41 remaining in the in the second quarter when Jacob Parker hit Matt Austin for a 27-yard scoring pass. The 2-point play failed.
Vina answered with a 33-yard touchdown pass from McCarley to Nick Schmittou.
Tharptown scored on a 1-yard run by Nathan Gray with 3:25 to play in the second quarter and Rey Lujan added the point after kick to cut the Red Devils' lead to 28-13.
McCarley extended the lead with a 41-yard run with about a minute to go in the half.
Vina's Ethan Hammock scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter to put the Red Devils ahead 40-13 and Clay Pierce scored on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter for the game's final score.
The Red Devils rolled up 474 yards of total offense, mostly on the ground, while limiting Tharptown to only 145 total yards.
McCarley led the Red Devils with 14 carries for 168 yards and two touchdowns while Hammock added 10 carries for 44 yards.
McCarley completed 7-of-11 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns.
Schmittou led the Red Devil receivers with two catches for 72 yards while Townsend had 42 yards and Ethan McInnis has 20 receiving yards.
Trevor Hallmark led the rushing attack for Tharptown, gaining 32 yards on five carries.
Brandon Cothrum completed both his pass attempts for 63 yards while Parker was 4-of-9 for 30 yards.
Gray hauled in three passes for 63 yards and Austin caught one pass for 27 yards.
Vina closes out the regular season next week when it hosts Hubbertville (5-4, 4-4) while Tharptown will visit Hatton (3-6, 2-5) in the final game of the season for both of those teams.
