RPD to increase traffic patrols downtown

The Russellville Police Department will be patrolling the downtown area more heavily since the department has been receiving complaints about drivers parking incorrectly and making improper turns.
Police Chief Chris Hargett said the department has been getting complaints about drivers making a U-turn in order to park along Jackson Ave.
"If you are traveling one way, and turn to park your vehicle on the opposite side of the street, this is an improper turn, and it's illegal," Hargett said.
Hargett said reverse parking is also another issue in the downtown area. When a driver parallel parks, the passenger side should be next to the curb.
"We have drivers parking where the driver's side is next to the curb, and that is reverse parking," Hargett said.
Hargett said the department will begin the crackdown with warnings for a few weeks, and will then start issuing citations.
Court Clerk LaDonna Hitt said the cost of ticket for improper turning is $123, and the cost of a reverse parking ticket could be as much as $500 depending on the circumstances.
Hargett said the department will also be looking for drivers who disobey the speed limits.
"We seem to have had an increase in accidents in February," Hargett said. "So drivers need to be aware of their speed."
