Russellville High School will serve as one of 12 pilot schools statewide for Project Community – a public/private partnership to enhance natural science education.
The announcement made yesterday penned the school as the only one in northwest Alabama to receive the distinction.
RHS Principal Rex Mayfield said the school will be awarded several tools for the project, including topographical maps of the local community; Peterson Field Guides for eastern forests, insects of North Alabama, birds of eastern and central Alabama, eastern reptiles and amphibians, eastern butterflies, eastern tress, edible wild plants, mammals and wildflowers, Acorn Naturalists Field Binoculars (10 per kit); Loupe Magnifiers (10 per kit of 7 times); Garmin eTrex Legend Handheld GPS and map topography software; a digital camera with photo card, compound light microscope and a complete episode package of Alabama Outdoors.
Project Community is a pilot educational program that uses the interdisciplinary design of the Discovering Alabama educational television series to make learning locally relevant. Project Community focuses on the natural resources of a particular community and provides free supplemental materials to teachers.
Project Community seeks to inspire scientific curiosity, instill conservation awareness, and enhance classroom learning supportive of state academic standards, particularly for the natural sciences.
