The Russellville Police Department wants everyone to know that there is a new scam circulating through Russellville.
Captain David Hester said that he has received complaints of phone calls where the caller says they are from the Social Security Administration claiming there is a problem with their social security number that needs to be corrected. To correct the problem the person said they need an existing number.
"This is not done," Hester said. "Social Security does not change your number."
Hester warns that the call may seem official because the caller I.D. shows that it is coming from Washington, D.C.
"Everyone should be aware that this is a scam, and if they are contacted they should not give out any information," Hester concluded.
