The Russellville Middle School tennis teams remained undefeated for the season as both the boys and the girls defeated Muscle Shoals on the road Thursday. The RMS girls (2-0) rolled to an easy 8-1 victory over the Lady Trojans. The RMS boys (2-0) split the singles matches and swept the two doubles matches to beat Muscle Shoals 5-3.
For the girls, Jordan Lindsey (10-2), Lauren Jackson (10-0), Cortney Wray (10-2), Anna Claire Burgess (10-2) and Marilla Duncan (1-2) posted singles wins for the Lady Golden Tigers.
In doubles, Messer/Wray (10-2), Lindsey/Jackson (10-1) and Burgess/Duncan (10-3) all won easily over Muscle Shoals.
The RMS boys played evenly with Muscle Shoals in the singles matches and put the victory away with a thrilling conclusion in the final match of the evening. Brandon King and Alex Richey, playing in the last doubles match, found themselves down three games early against the number one and two Trojan boys. King and Richey battled back to win a tiebreaker 10-8, clinching the victory for the Golden Tigers.
For the boys, Richey (12-10), Cody Cameron (10-8), and Jared McCaplin (10-1) won their singles matches. In doubles, the RMS boys had two wins as King-Richey (10-10, 10-8 tiebreaker) and Cameron-McCalpin (10-2) prevailed over the Trojans.
"The girls had a great showing tonight," RMS coach Jill Phillips said. "As a whole, we played like I hoped, based on their experience. The boys had another excellent match. It was really close until Brandon and Alex pulled through and won the tiebreaker in the doubles match. It was a huge comeback for them after being down three games early on."
