On a beautiful spring-like Tuesday afternoon the RHS golf team opened their 2007 season with a home match against Curry High School.
Unfortunately for the Golden Tigers, the results were not as pretty as the weather.
The Curry Blue squad shot 157 on the par 35 front nine to edge out the Russellville Black squad at 159.
Sophomore Brett Fish and junior Brian Brown led RHS Black with a score of 36 each. Juniors John Seal and T. J. Seagraves shot 40 and 47, respectively, and junior Cody Bragwell closed out the scoring for the Black team with a 55. Andrew Freeman led Curry Blue with a score of 36.
The Curry White team shot 208 to beat the Golden Tiger Gold team by four strokes. Sophomore Trea Mosley shot 48 to lead the RHS Gold team. Sophomore Taylor Reeps came in second for RHS Gold with a 53 followed closely by sophomore Nick Ross at 54. Freshman Alex Pounders and seventh grader Ty Trapp each shot 57 to close out the scoring for the Gold squad.
With a young group of golfers, head coach Phil Phillips was not disappointed in the results.
"I felt like we played pretty well," Phillips said. "I think today's score of 159 is as good as our second best score at home last year. Also, we have not been outside as much this year. Curry's number one through number three players were very solid."
Playing as an individual, Chase Hutcheson of Phil Campbell shot 37.
Russellville then traveled to Moulton on Wednesday to take on the Lawrence County Red Devils. The result was much better, with Russellville shooting 163 to beat the 168 shot by LCHS. Russellville Gold came in third with 216.
"Deer Run can be a very tough course, especially the first time you see it," Phillips said. "We shot 169 last year in the middle of March so it's good to shoot 163 late in February this year. Probably the most pleasing thing I saw today is our seventh grader, Ty Trapp, in the second outing of his life shot a 48."
At Deer Run, John Seal of Russellville Black shot the low round of the day with a 36. Brett Fish and T. J. Seagraves scored 41, Brian Brown shot 45 and Trea Mosley shot 53.
For the RHS Gold squad, Ty Trapp led the way with 48 followed by Taylor Reeps with 52. Cody Bragwell shot 57, and Nick Ross and Alex Pounders shot 59.
