A group from Childersburg High School has presented a proposal to the AHSAA under which baseball games would begin the last Tuesday in March and conclude with championship games in June.
If approved, the proposal would take effect in 2008.
Currently, high school baseball teams typically begin play in late February or early March and the season ends with the state finals in May.
The new proposal, one of 13 that have been mailed to the schools with a Feb. 23 deadline for returning their votes to the State Office, offers a clear advantage in one area: The weather.
Early-season baseball games in late February and throughout March are often played in frigid temperatures or inclement weather. By pushing the schedule back nearly a month, all the games would be played during the spring and early summer.
Sixty percent (28 out of 47) of baseball-playing states, including Kentucky, Georgia and Texas, already decide baseball championships in June or July.
