Remembering the good ol' days

This week I have been remembering about my high school days as a co-worker prepares for her senior prom. I have been out of school for almost 11 years and the list of things I'd do differently is short but substantial.
Last year I got the privilege of going to my ten-year class reunion. Jimmy and I had a great time but it made me miss the fun we had back then. We talked, ate and danced to our favorite songs.
But, when I ran into my main crush he did not remember me. He said that I looked familiar but could not pinpoint my name.
I'll be honest with you, I was a little heartbroken. I had wanted to date this guy since the ninth grade. As a junior, I asked him to the prom and he declined my offer. However, he did dance with me at the prom that night. He stared at me while we danced. I thought that was a little weird.
As a senior, I invited him to a dinner but again he graciously said no. And, 10 years later, he didn't even remember my name.
To this day, I don't know what I found in him that was so attractive. I must have liked his intellect. He was one of our class valedictorians. He wasn't and still isn't much to look at but I was crazy about him and I'll never forget him.
Over the years I have forgotten a lot of the people I went to school with because I moved out of state and a lot of my classmates moved away, too. It's amazing how unimportant people become when they move from you life.
My best friend still lives in my hometown and we are still friends. We call each other every month or two and get together once in a while. She keeps me up to date on the gossip about those like her who didn't move away.
Going home makes me miss the way things were, or at least the way I remember them. Looking back I have rose-colored glasses about my home and my life back then.
Even though high school was kind of tough for me, I miss it. I miss cruising the Sonic. I miss going to prom. I miss just hanging out. I miss being innocent. I miss going on first dates. I miss the relationships and I miss the loves of that time.
My mom used to tell me that high school years are the best years of your life. I always replied by rolling my eyes and saying whatever.
While they might not be my best years, they definitely weren't my worst. I think my best years started when I got married and when my children were born. And, when they are grown, I'll look back and think that years spent raising kids weren't that bad after all.
We have to go through so much in life that we feel the need to rush through it. But, we need to stop and realize today will be gone tomorrow and we can never get it back so we need to enjoy it.
