She was still tired yesterday afternoon, but Vincenta Carbajal-Barrientos was happy.
The mother of the first newborn in Franklin County not only celebrated her birthday, but also the birth of her new son.
Edgar Leonel was born at 11:53 p.m. Monday by natural birth at Russellville Hospital and became the first baby born in the county in 2007.
The little bundle of joy weighed 8-pounds, 3-ounces and was 20 1/2-inches long.
Besides having the distinction of being the first Franklin County newborn of 2007, Edgar might also be the most punctual baby in the nursery: His due date was Jan. 4, but decided to come a little early than planned to wish his mother a happy birthday.
"Edgar was born on Vincenta's birthday," Dr. Eduardo Santiago, the delivering physician said. "We all thought that was special for both of them to share the same birthday, which happens to be the first day of the New Year."
Edgar is Leonel Loaeza and Vincenta's second child and he was also welcomed by his older sister, Karen Lizbeth, 2.
"Everyone is really happy about Edgar," Leonel said.
"I couldn't be more proud that I have a daughter and now a son."
Dr. Santiago delivered Edgar, Dr. Rizk Moutagaly serves as Edgar's pediatrician and Yolanda Odom, Debra Bell and Lisa Felkins were the nurses on hand during the birth.
The family was presented with a special basket of items donated from the following businesses: Village Florist, Akins Florist, Ava's Antiques, Calvary Baptist Church, North Highlands Church of Christ, Citizens Bank, Community Spirit Bank, Bank Independent, First Metro Bank, Sneed Photography, Baby Boutique and Gifts, The Cottage, Too Sister's Too Mothers and Others and Roden's.
About 8,000 babies are born in the United States on Jan. 1 each year, according to the National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
