Local principal honored

Ramona Robinson, principal of West Elementary School in Russellville, was selected as Alabama's 2006 National Distinguished Principal, announced AIG VALIC, a national leading provider of retirement plan services to for-profit and not-for-profit education, healthcare and government organizations and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.
A graduate of the University on North Alabama, Robinson has served as principal of West Elementary School for the past nine years.
Dr. Vincent Ferrandino, executive director of NAESP, said when Robinson arrived at West Elementary School, the curriculum was in disarray.
To solve this problem, Robinson formed a committee of veteran teachers in each grade to standardize the curricula. Also, she devised a point system that places children in classrooms based on academic ability, resulting in more evenly divided classrooms and a more cohesive faculty. According to her colleagues, Robinson has truly made a tremendous impact on the educational opportunities of her students.
The principals are nominated by their peers based on their commitment to excellence and their contributions to guiding students, forging positive relationships with parents and serving their community with distinction. Nominees must serve as a principal for a minimum of five years to be eligible.
The 2006 award celebration marks the 22nd year that the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) and the U.S. Department of Education have presented this prestigious award to our nation's leading principals.
