Getting from here to there
By Staff
Sometimes you forget how easy it is to get lost.
My family's never been one to move a whole lot, so I've never had to worry about it.
While I was living at home we only moved once.
I left my home in Pleasant Grove, where I lived for 11 years, and moved to Clanton. I lived in Clanton for three years.
In all that time, you really take for granted how well you know where you are and how to get just about any where from there.
When you move, you tend to forget you have to learn the terrain all over again.
Luckily, most local businesses are located off of or close to a major highway. I have managed to find my way around town rather well with the help of directions from co-workers.
However, being in the news business you quickly realize that not everything happens off a major roadway. In fact, most things seem to happen down a long and winding county road that everyone's heard of but no one seems to know where it is.
Regardless of where you're from or where you are, it amazes me at how fire, police and 911 dispatchers know their area so well.
Accurate map keeping can only do so much.
A major part of the response time of emergency vehicles is that the drivers and 911 operators know what roads lead to where and how they connect to where they need to be.
I'm still trying to figure all that out.
So, if you see a guy in a red truck driving slowly down your county road, it's probably just me. And I'm not lost. I'm just trying to figure out how to get to where I'm going from where I am.
