Cattlemen gear up for sandwich fund-raiser

This Friday, April 28, Franklin area residents will have a chance to enjoy a premium-quality steak sandwich and support a good cause.
From 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., the Franklin County Cattlemen will be kicking off their annual fundraising drive in the Franklin Center (Foodland) parking lot on U.S. 43 in Russellville.
"These are ribeye steak sandwiches on a 5-inch bun," said Orland Britnell, FCC board member and vice president of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association. "For $5, you get a sandwich, chips and a soft drink. It's the best bargain in the county."
All proceeds will benefit the cattlemen's College Scholarship Fund.
"Over the last four years, the fund has awarded $20,000 in scholarships," said Britnell. "Every high school in the county will receive two scholarships."
Each scholarship is awarded in the amount of $500. The cattlemen's scholarship committee makes the final determination on recipients.
"We try to make sure these scholarships go to students who really need them," said Britnell.
Britnell said the cattlemen will continue to sell sandwiches on Friday until the last one had been sold.
"This has turned into a pretty popular event," said Britnell. "It takes 16 to 18 people to handle the grilling, food preparation and sales. We encourage the public to come early, but we'll be here until we run out of sandwiches."
