Red Devils fall to Marion County in area opener

Adam Boyett hit a pair of home runs, including a grand slam, on Tuesday to lead Marion County to an 8-2 victory over Vina.
The Red Devils (14-4, 0-1 Class 1A, Area 13) trailed just 3-2 before Boyett hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth.
His grand slam in the sixth gave Marion County more breathing room.
Marion County scored twice in the bottom of the first and again in the third to build an early 3-0 lead.
The Red Devils cut it to 3-2 in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Luke Childers and an RBI groundout by Anthony Hester.
Boyett's two bombs provided the final margin.
Gary Taylor took the loss for Vina, allowing three runs in four innings. He struck out seven.
Rodney Barnes pitched the final two innings in relief, striking out three.
Corey Scott led the Red Devils with three hits. Childers added two hits, and Taylor, Hester, Max Weeks and Paul Wilkins each had one.
Chris Dunavent earned the win for Marion County, scatternig nine hits in a complete game.

Belgreen 3 Speake 2
Justin Gardner (2-3) struck out five and allowed just five hits in six innings on Tuesday as the Bulldogs earned their second win of the season.
Gardner also finished with two hits, including an RBI double, for Belgreen (2-8). Jonathan Snipes added an RBI single.
Colbert Heights 4 Phil Campbell 2
Mitchell Dalrymple pitched six strong innings on Tuesday as Colbert Heights bounced back from Monday's loss to earn a split of the area doubleheader.
Patrick Cummings had three hits and two runs scored for the Wildcats (11-8, 5-1 Class 2A, Area 16).
Jackson Agee worked the seventh inning for the save.
Randy Cochran and Matt Thomas each had two hits to lead Phil Campbell (12-7, 5-1).
Cochran took the loss.
