Oden Eyes Tax on Soft Drinks, Cigs as Key to More County School Funds
New taxes on soft drinks and cigarettes, coupled with an amusement tax, may provide the key to more funds for Franklin County's school system, Rep. W.E. Oden said this week in Montgomery.
Rep. Oden told this newspaper he is preparing a bill along those lines and will introduce it in the Legislature not later than May.
The new tax would affect Franklin County only as provided by local bill, Rep. Oden said. Details, he added, are not complete, "but we're working along that line. I think the sales tax is high enough."
Sen. Cantrell Tells Outline of New Bills
Sen. Lynchmore Cantrell will introduce a bill to enable Franklin County municipalities to erect and own buildings as an enticement to new industry, he said this week.
Sen. Cantrell, who represnets Franklin, Colbert and Marion counties, said he is working on the bill now and will release a copy as soon as it is completed.
Similar bills have been introduced for Franklin County before but have been defeated.
