Franklin Maps Out Inauguration Plans
With two high school bands, two official cars, and a parade float Franklin County will be well-represented in the governor's inauguration to be held Jan. 17 in Montgomery.
The county will be represented in the higher ranks of the incoming administration of James E. Folsom with A.W. Todd to take office as commissioner of agriculture and industries for Alabama.
Mr. Todd will be sworn in by Supreme Court justice Bob Simpson, originally from Florence, on the steps of the new office building at 8 a.m.
A barbecue will be held for Franklin Countians at the coliseum Sunday night, Mr. Todd said this week.
Franklin County will be the 11th county in line in the parade, according to E. Ford Grissom, Franklin County inaugural chairman.
Russellville High School's Marching Hundred and Red Bay High School's band will be the two bands from Franklin County.
Cotton May Be Hard Row to Hoe In Coming Year
Franklin County farmers appear to be in for a rough year in 1955 due to a cutback in acreage allotments of about 24 percent.
Ernest Stockton, Franklin office manager of Agricultural Stabilization Conservation Agency, noted this week that farmers will be caught in a two-way squeeze this year.
The total cotton allotment for Franklin Cunty has been set at 14,131 acres for 1955–a drop of 920 acres from last year's original allotment of 15,051 acres.
That's where the second part of the squeeze comes in.
Last year, the original allocation was increased by 3,000 to 4,000 acres, and although a strong move for a similar boost is expected this year, Franklin farmers as yet have no assurance that this will be forthcoming.
Burglary Suspect Caught in Missouri
Sheriff J. Stratt Byars was to leave Thursday for Caruthersville, Mo., to bring back William Estes, 24, who is charged with breaking and entering N.E. Wilson's store at Hodges about a month ago.
Estes was apprehended earlier this week by Missouri officers.
