Evan Fergerson and Luke Britnell each ran for two touchdowns on Tuesday as the Russellville Middle School football team avenged a previous loss to Muscle Shoals with a 34-16 rout of the Trojans at Tiger Stadium.
Muscle Shoals had defeated the Golden Tigers 32-16 in the season-opener on September 7.
Russellville (2-2) fell behind 8-0 on Tuesday before responding with 28 unanswered points to blow the game open.
Muscle Shoals grabbed the early lead on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The two-point conversion attempt was good and the Trojans led 8-0.
Russellville answered on its first possession with a 6-yard touchdown run by Britnell, and Fergerson's two-point conversion run tied the game.
On the Trojans' ensuing drive, Russellville defensive end Demorian Abernathy intercepted a pass and returned it 40 yards to the Muscle Shoals 6-yard line.
Britnell scored on the next play to give Russellville a 14-8 lead. The two-point try was no good.
After holding Muscle Shoals on downs, the Golden Tigers scored again on a 6-yard pass from Jake Ward to Hunter Thomas. The try for two failed and Russellville led 20-8 at the half.
After a scoreless third quarter, Fergerson added to the lead with a 15-yard touchdown run early in the fourth. The two-point conversion attempt was good on a run by Jay Bates, and the Golden Tigers led 28-8.
The Trojans briefly halted the onslaught by scoring on a 35-yard flea-flicker, and the two-point try trimmed the lead to 28-16.
Fergerson closed out the scoring with a 30-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.
Russellville plays at Walker Tuesday, with a seventh-grade game at 5:30 p.m. and an eighth-grade game to follow.
Russellville split a pair of games with Walker on September 28, winning the eighth-grade game 20-14 and falling in the seventh-grade game 18-12.
