Father-son team wins first Navy League tourney

The father-son team of Robert Sanford and William Sanford shot a 27-hole 96 on Saturday to win the championship flight of the inaugural Meridian Area Navy League Invitational golf tournament at Ponta Creek Golf Course.
After shooting a 33 in the first nine holes of the event, the Sanfords blistered around the course with a 63 in the final 18 holes to take first place in the 55-team event.
Kennie Ford and Bubba Hannah finished second in the championship flight after shooting a 100. Al Brown and Robert Trout also shot a 100 to finish third place.
According to tournament chair Jamie Williams, the scramble-format event went very well.
The event was put together with sponsors from around Meridian to help support the Ponta Creek Golf Course at NAS.
Golfers were able to enjoy the 27-hole scramble along with some good food and great door prizes.
In the first flight, Billy Hines and Wayne Shelton took first place with a 102 and Bruce Barham and Mike Johnson also shot a 102 to finish second.
Steve Fleming and Andy Gilley rounded out the top three with a 105.
In the second flight, Bill Hendricks and Walt Bullock shot a 66 in the final 18 holes to take first place with a 104.
Phil Dickens and Heath Ray took second in the flight with a 106 and Jim Williams and Billy Fostor took third with a 106.
In the third flight, David Stehle and Keith Lewis took first with a 112 while Becky May and Margie Edwards came in second with a 117. Bill Crawford and Bob Huff rounded out the top three with a 119.
In the fourth flight, Chad Barnett and Jason Herrington took first with a 113 while Perry Parnell and Eric Barber also shot a 113 to take second place. Jeffery Carver and Jack Christopher finished third with a 119.
In the long drive competition, Benton Latham outdrove everyone on No. 10 to take first.
Wayne Powell, Dennise McDill, Walt Bullock and Robert Sanford each won a Big Bertha Steel Head Wood by winning the closest to the hole competitions on the par three holes.
