Test scores: Most county schools remain on top

By By Georgia E. Frye / staff writer
Aug. 15, 2003
Most Lauderdale County schools continue to exceed state levels in the Mississippi Curriculum Test, a standardized exam administered every year, but two county schools are lagging behind.
Northeast Elementary School scored below the state average in five of nine categories, Southeast Elementary School in eight of nine categories.
Kathy Wilson, principal of Northeast Elementary School, could not be reached for comment Thursday.
School Superintendent David Little said he is pleased overall with the county's test scores. But, if scores do not improve at Southeast and Northeast elementary schools, action will be taken.
Little said Southeast's test scores have improved from last year, but have been below the state average for the past few years.
Scores from the Mississippi Curriculum Test a standardized test that measures reading, language and math skills in second through eighth grade students were released today.
Every student's score falls into one of four categories: minimal, basic, proficient or advanced. Proficient means a student is performing at grade level and is ready to continue to the next grade.
Here's a look at each of the Lauderdale County School District's seven elementary and middle schools. The scores reflect what percentage of students scored at or above the "proficient" level.
Clarkdale Attendance Center
In 18 out of 18 subject areas, the percentage of Clarkdale students in the second through the eighth grades scoring at the "proficient" level exceeded the statewide percentage.
Northeast Elementary School
In three out of nine categories, students in the second through the fourth grades scored below the state's "proficient" level. The low categories were second grade language, third grade language and fourth grade math.
Northeast Middle School
In 12 out of 12 categories, students in the fifth through the eighth grades scored above the statewide "proficient" level.
Southeast Elementary School
In eight out of nine subject areas, students scored below the statewide "proficient" level. Only second grade math students scored above the state level.
Southeast Middle School
In 12 out of 12 categories, students in the fifth through the eighth grades scored above the statewide "proficient" level.
West Lauderdale Elementary School
In eight of nine subject areas, students scored above the statewide "proficient" level. In one area, second grade math, students scored below the statewide "proficient" level.
West Lauderdale Middle School
In 12 out of 12 categories, students in the fifth through the eighth grades scored above the statewide "proficient" level.
