Lauderdale County, Meridian schools hold parent conference day

Lauderdale County and Meridian public school students had the day off Monday while their parents had an opportunity to visit with their children's teachers.
Carpenter said she teaches about 76 students and had seen about seven parents on Monday. She said most parents come by after work, and she was expecting four or five more before the end of the day.
Carpenter said her students' parents are involved in their children's progress at school. But, she said, parents of students who are performing well usually don't attend parent conference day.
Carpenter, along with fellow fifth-grade teacher Jackie Cheatham, say they have no major behavioral problems in their classes.
Cheatham said she also likes to discuss things parents can do to help their children succeed.
Cheatham attributes the success of West Lauderdale's students to the parents. She said it makes all the difference in the world if students have two parents at home.
