    Excellence in Education

    HATTIESBURG Five upcoming seniors will attend Girls State this week at the University of Southern Mississippi.
    The students are: Daphane Cornwell of Northeast High School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cornwell; and West Lauderdale High School students Blair Kynard, daughter of Mrs. Connie Joyner; Elizabeth Harmon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Harmon; Heather French, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James French and Jessica Lee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Lee.
    Dick McWilliams Post 125 of the American Legion Auxiliary in Meridian sponsored the students along with contributions from the ROTC of Northeast High School, the Meridian Junior Auxiliary, Barham Funeral Home, Nelson Hall Chevrolet and Jeff Anderson Regional Medical Center.
    Elizabeth Shearer Compton of Meridian has been selected as the W.H. Entrekin Family Mathematics Scholar for the new college year at Meridian Community College. She will receive a $900 award.
    A Meridian High School graduate, Compton is the daughter of David Compton. She is taking her initial two years of study in accountancy at MCC.
    Retiring East Central Community College personnel received special recognition at the college's annual appreciation dinner held at the Decatur campus.
    The retirees included: Larry Hogue, vice president for development and alumni relations; Ann Burkes, head librarian and Phi Theta Kappa co-adviser; Sammy Price, athletic director/women's head basketball coach and sociology instructor; Alice Pouncey, psychology instructor; and Dr. Thomas Key, biology instructor.
    LIVINGSTON, Ala. Area students were recognized recently during Honors Day at The University of West Alabama.
    The students were: From Meridian Kelly Ligott, daughter of Marsha Suire, recognized for academic achievement in sociology; Jacie M. Bridges, daughter of Tom and Pat Bridges, inducted into Alpha Chi and Cardinal Key Honor Societies; Ryan Harvey, son of Marie Harvey, recognized for academic achievement in technology; Amanda Tucker, daughter of Raymond and Sarah Tucker, academic achievement in accounting; Teresa Scott, daughter of Bennie and Shirley Fontan, inducted into Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society; Lisa L. Hinson, daughter of Eddie and Cheryl Jones and wife of Michael Hinson, recipient of the Pinnacle Honor Society Academic Achievement Award, the Special Education Department Award and chosen for Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities; Augusta Carol Holloway, daughter of Scooter Holloway and Julie Holloway, recipient of the York Rotary Club Scholarship.
    From Toomsuba Amy Joyner, daughter of Ray and Kathy Joyner, inducted into Blue Key Honor Fraternity and chosen for Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities; Kristin Salkeld, daughter of Jan Salkeld and Steve Salkeld, inducted into Alpha Chi and Cardinal Key Honor Societies.
    Also recognized was Constance Johnson of Hickory, daughter of Nelda Johnson, recognized for academic achievement as a participant in the Honors Program of Study.
    Sonja Sparrow, a sophomore in the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Meridian Community College, is the recipient of one of three Emily Louise McDonald Memorial Nursing Scholarships for 2001-2002. Sparrow, 29, works at The Specialty Hospital of Meridian. She is a graduate of Southeast Lauderdale High School.
    Sharon McCaskey, 38, of Waynesboro, is the newly selected Jacob Chester Frist Scholar at Meridian Community College. A sophomore in the Associate Degree Nursing Program, McCaskey will receive the $1,000 scholarship for the new school year.
    The East Mississippi Group of Financial Women International is providing a $250 scholarship for Meridian Community College sophomore Michelle Blackwell of Meridian. Blackwell is pursuing an accountancy degree.
    HATTIESBURG The following students from Meridian received degrees during William Carey College spring commencement: Richard McMullen and Reginald Scott, bachelor's degrees; and Danny Scanlon, master's degree in business administration.
    BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Amy Carol Evans, daughter of Noel and Nida Evans of Meridian, has graduated from Samford University, McWhorter School of Pharmacy, with a doctor of pharmacy degree. Evans is a pharmacist at the University of Alabama Medical Center.
    JACKSON Joshua Maeda was awarded his bachelor's degree with a major in philosophy from Bellhaven College during commencement ceremonies May 12. Maeda graduated cum laude and was on the school's President's List for the spring 2001 semester.
