New director takes reins in Red Bay

Red Bay’s Senior Center has welcomed a new director, Peggy Benn, who said she is dedicated to putting 110 percent of her effort into the job.

“It was unexpected, but I’m having fun with it,” Benn said.

This isn’t her first time working with the senior center. She said several years ago she was a driver who delivered Meals-on-Wheels for the center.

“That’s what I was applying for this time, and then they offered me this,” she explained.

After taking a couple of days to consider the offer, Benn accepted the position, ready to start a new adventure. She said the opportunity came at the good time because she was already in the process of retiring from all of her other jobs that she had taken on over the years.

“I’ve been involved in the Red Bay school system for over 40 years,” she said.

Benn worked as a school bus driver, support personnel, a teacher’s aide, a substitute and then a foster grandparent. But this change of pace isn’t slowing her down any.

“I try not to have a dull moment here. Life’s all about having fun,” Benn said.

At the center, people can find Benn playing games with the attendees like bingo, dominoes, Rook and guessing games.

As of right now, Benn said she has no outings planned because she is still in the process of getting certified to drive the van, but she said she is looking forward to planning those as soon as she can.
