FCSO arrests student on drug charge

A 14-year-old boy who allegedly brought unauthorized prescription medication to school at Tharptown last week is in custody, arrested for possession of a controlled substance.

Principal Barry Laster said the boy shared the medication with at least one other student, a 13-year-old girl. When the two students were both observed to be exhibiting odd symptoms during their respective classes, “we pulled them out of the class and questioned them and found out what was going on,” Laster said.

The boy was examined at the hospital and then transported to the juvenile detention center, Sheriff Shannon Oliver said. The girl was taken to the Russellville Hospital Emergency Room, spent the night in ICU and was released the next day. She has not returned to school, Laster said.

Laster said the incident is an isolated event.

“We do have programs here at school such as Students Against Destructive Decisions and character education, where we do try to teach our students not to get involved in these types of things,” Laster said. “We hope students use it as a learning experience and nothing like this happens again.”
