RMS art show winners named
At the Russellville Middle School Art show held on May 12, several talented middle school students received awards for projects they have worked on throughout the school year.
According to their art teacher, Nancy Meeks, the students were eligible to receive two kinds of awards: an RMS Art Award or an award given by the Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council, who sponsored the art show and gave $100 to be distributed to their winners.
“Each student was allowed to pick a piece of artwork to enter in the show,” Meeks said. “Categories included charcoals, pencil drawings, crayon etchings, paintings, pottery, bird houses, weaving and calligraphy to name a few. The students worked very hard on their projects and I was impressed with the quality of their work.
Meeks said she felt the art show was important not only as a way for the parents and community to see the work her students have done but for her students to see how talented they really are.
“These kids don’t realize the breadth and depth of their work until they see it all up and displayed,” Meeks said.
“The art show allows them to take pride in their work and feel a sense of accomplishment and know what they’ve done is worthwhile. We’ve had people trying to buy their art, so it definitely has value.”
Meeks added that she wanted to express her thanks to the Franklin County Arts and Humanities Council for their sponsorship and to Randy Cooper and Amy Buchanan of Cooper’s Framing in Russellville for the free frame work they’ve done for several years in support of the art program.
