Fire Guts Sockwell Building on Tuesday
The second large fire to hit Russellville business firms in two weeks Tuesday night gutted the Sockwell Building on E. Franklin Street, heavily damaging three business firms and leaving the building an almost total loss.
Estimates of damage were placed at about $50,000.
Damaged by the blaze was American Plumbing &Heating Co., McCollum Radio &TV Service and Better TV Cable Co.
Dependable Service Center, which had several television sets stored in the building, also suffered damages.
Scott Bridge to Be Rebuilt; Two Overpasses May Be Constructed
Scott Bridge-located between Oliver's Store and Hodges on the road from Belgreen-will be rebuilt in the very near future, according to Rep. W. E. Oden.
Rep. Oden said this week that plans are now being completed by Alabama Highway Department and that construction will begin immediately as soon as planning work is completed.
The bridge, Rep. Oden said, will be built on a federal aid basis.
Many Fine Items to Be Auctioned for Polio Benefit
Plans for the big auction to raise additional funds for the March of Dimes are progressing rapidly, according to Franklin McCarty, Jr., commander of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The auction, sponsored by the VFW, will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, on Russellville's Main Street. Ed Rikard's Band will play for half an hour preceding the auction.
