Ending weeks of speculation around the Franklin County Courthouse, newly-elected District Attorney Joey Rushing confirmed this week that he plans to hire Doug Evans as his assistant when he takes office in January.
Evans is currently the chief assistant District Attorney in Lauderdale County.
Evans has served as chief assistant in Lauderdale County since 1999, and as an assistant D.A. in Lauderdale County since 1989, serving under Steve Graham and Billy Jackson. This year, Jackson was defeated by Chris Connolly, creating the possibility that Evans would be out of a job in January.
Evans said he was "flattered and excited" when Rushing offered him the position.
Rushing said one of the main factors in his decision was the experience Evans brings to the job.
Evans, 60, is a Sheffield native, graduating from Sheffield High in 1962. He attended Samford University in Birmingham and graduated in 1969 from the Cumberland School of Law. From 1973 until 1988, Evans was in private law practice.
Evans' first official day on the job will be Jan. 18. He said he is excited about working with Rushing in Franklin County.
