Students at Russellville Elementary School learned the true meaning of the holiday season this year.
The students collected over 3500 cans of food that will be distributed to six local families and the Faith Mission Outreach.
Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott sponsors the food drive each year by providing parties to the classes that collect the most goods.
The remaining items will be given to Faith Mission Outreach in downtown Russellville.
The fourth grade students chose not to have their annual Christmas parties in which they exchange gifts with classmates. Instead, the entire fourth grade went to Wal-Mart and purchased items that will be given to the six families selected to receive the boxes of food.
The kids also worked to divide the food into the boxes, preparing meat, vegetables and fruits.
