Hot day at Buddy McGhee

By By Will Bardwell/staff writer
July 25, 2004
It was a long, hot day at Briarwood Country Club, but the leaders of the Buddy McGhee Six-Person Scramble got off the course quickly.
The team of J. Grace, W. Hurst, J. Boykin, J. Douglas, B. Kimbrell and J. Early combined for a 20-under-par 52 on Saturday to jump atop the leaderboard at the annual event. Close behind were R. Null, D. Bounds, S. Eubanks, K. Eubanks, J. Anders and J.T. Williamson with a 53.
F. Wagner, J. Rainey, J. Hamm, J. Keller, K. Stone and M. Willis stood in third place after the first day of action with a 54, and four teams shared the fourth-place spot on the leaderboard with 55.
Full names were not available.
With temperatures in the low 90s for much of the day, McGraw said the 6,500-yard course played much shorter than Briarwood golfers usually expect.
Teams with a 59 or lower on Saturday tee off this morning at 8:30. All other teams will begin their final rounds at 1:30 p.m.
Saturday's unusually low scores kept some teams with seemingly stellar scores in the lower flights for today's round.
The championship flight will contain teams who shot 56 or lower on Saturday. Teams with scores of 57-58 will comprise the first flight, and scores of 59-61 landed teams in the second flight. The remaining teams that shot 62 or higher will make up the third flight.
No team shot higher than 4-over 68 on Saturday.
